Shanti Niketan is a peaceful village town located at just 155 km from Kolkata in West Bengal. It is known world over for Visva Bharati University and its contribution to education, arts and literature.

There is a lot to do in and around Shantiniketan. Rabidranath Tagore’s residence, the Uttarayan Complex, made up of five houses built during different phases of his life, is one of the most popular destinations in town. Upasanagriha, a prayer house made with Belgium glass; Chhatimtala, where the Rabindranath Tagor’s father Maharshi Devendranath Tagore used to meditate; and Amrakunja, open air classrooms under large trees are some interesting places within the campus. The arts department, Kala Bhavan is also a must visit. The local craftsmen and women of the area set up the Saturday market by the river in Sonajhuri Forest. It is a great place to shop directly from artisans at throwaway prices, enjoy authentic Santhali food, and experience Baul music.
